2013 UC grads march into Commencement on Sunday

  • The 2013 Spring semester is in the books on the Charleston campus! Just under 250 UC graduates marched at Commencement yesterday under picturesque conditions. Thank you to everyone who helped coordinate a flawless event. From the facilities team who carefully prepared a beautifully manicured campus, to the dozens of faculty and staff members who eagerly volunteered all day in various capacities, you helped make a memorable ceremony for all in attendance!

  • The first-ever regional University of Charleston Commencement will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Approximately 150 graduates will be marching in this historic event. Volunteers are still needed to help with various tasks on Saturday, so please e-mail Rhonda Shepperd at ASAP to let her know you are available.

  • Leadercast is coming this Friday. This event is one of the largest of its kind, broadcasting world-renowned content to hundreds of locations around the world. You will hear from some of the world’s top leaders, including former Chairman & CEO of General Electric Jack Welch, Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. You will learn how to improve your own leadership skills and also have the opportunity to network with other leaders in your area.   • Debbie Amos closed from behind to win the WVIAC Conference 5,000-meter championship Saturday at Glenville State College. Her time of 17:49 is a new school by an incredible 25 seconds. Other notable individual performances included Emily Bokanovich’s fourth-place finish in the javelin (38.75 meters), Kortney Willey’s fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter (4:55), Britney Henson’s fifth-place finish in the discus (32.84 meters) and Megan Turley’s sixth-place finisch in the shot put (10.55 meters). In the 4×400-meter relay, the team of Bokanovich, Willey, Meccah Ali-McDaniel, and Andrea Gonzales dropped 15 seconds to best their ranking and finish in 5th place with a time of 4:15.The UC 4×400-meter relay team of Bokanovich, Chelsea Chambers, Emily Lilly and Ali-McDaniel topped their best time of the year to finish in sixth with a time of 51.80 seconds.

  • Skipper Lee Bradley’s team pulled the upset of the WVIAC baseball tournament last Wednesday when the knocked off no. 1-seed, and nationally ranked, Seton Hill 16-14. Starter Josh Weinberg picked up the win for UC, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing eight earned runs, while Tyler Itnyre earned the save. The Golden Eagles were led in offense by Robert Collin who drove in four on a 2-for-6 effort with both hits being doubles. UC closed out the tourney with losses to Concord and then to the Griffins in an elimination game. The team finished 20-29 on the year.


  • The UC softball team went 1-2 in the WVIAC tournament, with a 4-2 win over Alderson-Broaddus and losses to Shepherd (7-2) and West Virginia Wesleyan (4-2). Freshman pitcher Morgan Aguierre went the distance for the win against the Battlers, giving up just one earned run. The squad finished the 2013 season with a 29-21 overall record and a third place regular season finish in the last season of the WVIAC.
