UC1112_050President Welch announced a new academic program beginning this spring, which will allow registered nurses (RN) to complete requirements for a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) online in as little as 18 months.


Students from the University of Charleston First Year Experience (FYE) Program hosted a haunted house at the Roosevelt Community Center on Thursday. The event was free for all children. Over 100 UC FYE students participated in the event. They decorated rooms at the Roosevelt Community Center in various themes targeted for different age groups. Candy was provided for children in attendance.

photoCongratulations to both groups of UC-Charleston Radiologic Science senior students who tied for first place at the Annual State Conference Quiz Bowl this past weekend in Parkersburg, W.Va.! The University of Charleston was represented by two different groups of UC students who tied with each other for the Championship, competing with 14 teams from across the state of West Virginia.

IMG_20131026_144624-1A big congratulations to UC Assistant Professor of Business Management Briana Cicero-Johns on earning the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration (SRCEA) Graduate Student Paper of the Year Award at last weekend’s SRCEA Conference in Oklahoma City, Okla. Briana’s paper was titled, “Preparing Researchers: Dissertation Quality Questions in Educational Leadership.” She is currently finishing up her coursework in the Higher Administration and Leadership Studies Doctoral Program at Marshall University. She is the first Marshall student to ever win this award.

Trey Kay (producer of The Great Textbook War, a radio report about the 1974 Kanawha Textbook Controversy, which was honored with Peabody, Murrow and DuPont Awards) has just completed a new radio documentary, The Long Game: Texas’ Ongoing Battle for the Direction of the Classroom. This report delves into the culture war battles over public school curriculum content, which have ebbed and flowed in the Lone Star State for the past fifty years.

Prior to the West Virginia broadcast of Long Game, West Virginia Public Radio and the University of Charleston will present a special listening session of the documentary on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Erma Byrd Art Gallery.  The presentation of the documentary will be followed by a panel discussion that will include Kay and Dr. Calandra Lockhart, Chair of UC’s Education Department. The presentation is open to the public and admission is free.

This Week in Sports:

  • The women’s soccer team plays their last home game of the season Tuesday at 2 p.m. vs Concord.
  • The volleyball team takes on Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Glenville State at 7 p.m. on Friday. Both games are at home.
  • Men’s soccer has their last home game of the season Wednesday at 7 p.m. vs Concord.
  • Football heads to West Liberty on Thursday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and live audio will be available on the UC athletics site.
  • Women’s crew heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., for Head of the Hooch.
