A new academic year has begun here at the University of Charleston! We’re happy to see familiar faces on campus again as well as welcoming the new. This year’s opening session was held on August 18th. Several new employees were introduced and received their UC pins. Dr. Welch discussed the importance of innovation and announced five primary goals centered on the topic for the 2014-15 year:
- Develop innovation as UC’s brand
- Fulfill the mission to recruit, retain and educate students
- Regional integration
- Accreditation for the School of Pharmacy and the University
- Complete fundraising for the Sports Center
Several awards were given to faculty and staff members in recognition of their time of service, ranging from 5 to 15 years. Dr. Welch was recognized by Vice President Harless and Regional President Forster for serving the UC community for 25 years.
Michelle Marlowe, Assistant Financial Aid Director, received the UC Heisman Award for going above and beyond the call of duty.
What’s Happening around Campus?
Friday, August 22nd marked the start of move-in weekend on campus. Below, the student life staff is pictured helping students “check-in” as they begin their college journey.
During their first weekend on campus, students enjoyed having some fun on the UC lawn during the Color Run event and more. The Student Activities Board made sure to make the entire first week on campus an enjoyable experience as they hosted a “Week of Welcome.” Activities throughout the week included an outdoor, UC themed Fiesta, an Amazing Race competition, a “Welcome Back” Cookout, Bingo, Outdoor Movie Night, Casino Night and “Freebie Friday,” in which students received customizable dry erase boards. Last Spring, the University of Charleston announced plans for an upcoming Associate Degree in Nursing program at the UC-Beckley location. This month, those plans became a reality. The inaugural class was welcomed into the program on Friday, September 5th. The Fall class is comprised of 15 students. The program is expecting another 15 students in the Spring. The most appealing aspect of the program is that students will be able to graduate as a registered nurse (RN) in just 16 short months.
School of Pharmacy Welcomes Class of 2018
The 9th Annual White Coat Ceremony was held on Friday, August 29th in Riggleman Auditorium. The School of Pharmacy welcomed 76 new students into the program. Pharmacist Joseph Duda, President of Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., was the featured guest speaker for the event. We wish the class of 2018 a successful journey!

Students from UC’s nursing program, Physician Assistant program and School of Pharmacy will also assist in serving patients under professional supervision. Primary care, behavioral health, counseling, and pharmacy services are available. Most insurance plans are accepted and students can receive counseling services free of charge.
UC Wins Inaugural MEC Commissioner’s Cup
The Mountain East Conference awarded the University of Charleston with the inaugural Commissioner’s Cup, which recognizes athletic excellence throughout the past year. The winner is determined by utilizing an “all-sports rating.” UC finished fourth or better in the final conference standings in 12 of the 14 MEC championship sports that were considered in UC’s rating. UC finished in the top spot just ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit.
