The month of October started out on an exciting note as UC Football and Concord were chosen to be featured on ESPN 3 as the NCAA II “Game of the Week.” Guests enjoyed an exciting night of football, in addition to a halftime show by the talented Dare Devil Dogs and a fantastic fireworks display right over the field. Our team won the game with a final score of 29-21. Relive the evening by watching the video recap by Brock Burwell: Watch Here.

#WhyIChose: College Application & Exploration Week

The College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV) has launched a social media campaign highlighting the reasons in which students at West Virginia colleges chose their schools. The idea behind the campaign is to target prospective students and give them an inside view of what each institution has to offer. The Communications team decided to take part in the campaign and set out to talk to students around campus about why they chose UC. Enjoy this inside look into the reasons some of our current students ultimately decided on University of Charleston:

 2020 Updates via Dr. Welch

1) During September, several 2020 submissions dealt with IT functions. There were questions about why printing was down, why students complained of access issues, the need for clearer IT priorities, and related questions.

In response, Scott Terry communicated via email saying that there had been computer hardware failures that affected the zero client computers in the Library Learning Commons, CTB210 and the residence halls. They also affected the Pharos printing system the HelpDesk ticketing system, and the card swipe system in the cafeteria and food court.  Students were directed to the Library Reference Desk for printing assistance.  Subsequently, Scott provided detailed briefings at the Administrative Council and the A-3 meetings regarding all IT issues.  In addition, there is a serious effort to prioritize our technology projects so we give our best attention to those deemed most important.  This prioritizing will include requests for additional software support.

Someone recommended that our requisitions for new hires should include additional information about computer setups; building access needs; office location; phone extension and email address. This could be routed through HR to the administrators who need to make it happen.

Second, could we hold “new hire orientation” in groups once or twice a month, complete all paperwork at that time and acquaint new employees with UC culture and processes.

Response:  The HR Department is supportive of a department’s immediate need to fill an open position. The head of each department, based on business need, is able to select the start date of a new hire.  Delaying start dates and/or orientation for new hires would make it harder to have quick transitions in positions.  Such a change would require the consent and support of all the individual departments.  Currently, all full – time employees receive a personal new hire orientation session from the HR Department.  The department manager can also have the employee complete new hire forms prior to their start date so their credentials can be set up in advance.

3) Create an online Guest Suites web form that feeds information into a database that will automatically issue a reserved or declined receipt to the submitter; add non-confidential to a web calendar and route confidential information to Laura Wellstead/President’s Office.

Response:  Having access through the Portal an online “Guest Suites Availability” calendar and an interface for submitting requests and finalized reservations forms would improve efficiency and communication.  We will explore the feasibility and will include the project in the IT prioritization project.

Coming Up…

Military Appreciation Day

We will host a Military Appreciation Day on campus Wednesday, November 11, at 9:30am. The ceremony will be held in the Erma Byrd Gallery, and will include addresses by Dr. Welch, Dr. John Barnette, and General James Hoyer, Adjutant General. The West Virginia National Guard music ensemble will perform, and a reception will follow in the Rotunda.

This is a great opportunity for the UC community to show its appreciation to our nearly 500 military students, as well as to all those serving their country.
